Types Of Depression
There are many types of depression. is a very common mental illness with 10-15% of most people suffering from at some stage throughout their lifetime. Some of the many types of symptoms include difficulty in concentration, guilty feelings, feelings of helplessness, anxiety, loss of interest in life, personal appearance and general activities, irritability, always feeling tired, difficulty sleeping, change of appetite, lack of energy, headaches and weight gain or loss.
Most people are aware of common depression; however there are many types of which are summarised below:
Major
Major is quite common and most people will probably know somebody that suffers from it. Major will have the symptoms listed above. The types of symptoms can vary from person to person, so not everyone will suffer all of these symptoms.
A person suffering from major will feel like they will never pull out of the way they are feeling and will always be in this hopeless state. The person will lose interest in activities and spend more time at home alone focusing on the bad feelings that they are experiencing. Of course the more the person thinks this way the more depressed they become.
Atypical Depression
Atypical is slightly different from major depression. This type of is more cyclic and the person will sometimes have feelings of happiness and elation and then at other times fall into deep feelings of sadness and fatigue. Symptoms are similar to major and include weight change, fatigue, oversleeping and overeating. Sufferers believe that their moods are controlled by outside events such as praise, attention, success. Atypical episodes can last for months and sometimes people may suffer from it forever.
Psychotic
People suffering from Psychotic will imagine they hear or see things that aren't actually there. They may hear voices or sounds and see visions that don't exist to anyone but them. These hallucinations are more common to someone suffering from schizophrenia. A person with Psychotic has hallucinations that are frightening and threatening, negative sounds and images.
Dysthymia
Dysthmyia sufferers don't even know they have depression. The way they are feeling is just a daily part of their lives and always has been. People suffering from Dysthmyia are people that are simply sad, blue, always depressed but for them it is completely normal and they don’t know any different so are not aware that it is actually an illness. They go through life feeling unimportant, frightened, dissatisfied and simply don't enjoy life.
Post Partum or Post Natal
These types of that occur either during or after pregnancy are called perinatal depression. Perinatal is very common and a large number of women will experience it during pregnancy or after childbirth. Due to the large number of changes going on within a woman’s body during this time anyway, this type of can be quite hard to diagnose. Some signs of perinatal are tiredness, changes in body weight, emotional changes and problems sleeping, but these also occur during pregnancy without necessarily having depression.
Manic or Bipolar
Manic can be defined as an emotional disorder characterized by changing mood shifts from to mania which can sometimes be quite rapid.
Every individual with bipolar disorder has a unique pattern of mood cycles, combining and manic episodes, which is specific to that individual, but predictable once the pattern is identified.
Effective treatment is available for bipolar disorder. Without treatment, marital break-ups, job loss, alcohol and drug abuse, and suicide may result from the chronic, episodic mood swings.
